Juan has completed his Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems from Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. Early in his career, Juan showed great technical skills while working as the Head of the J2EE R&D Department at Prominente S.A. There, he led research and development on new Java/JEE technologies and built creative frameworks using B2B models and SUN blueprints.

In his early career, he was awarded by IBM for successful adoption of WebSphere J2EE solution technologies, and led the migration of the company’s flagship BPM product from Microsoft. From Support Engineer to Global Leader: Juan’s IBM Journey
In 2004, Juan P. Napoli started his career at IBM, where he stayed an incredible 19 years, climbing the corporate ladder to become one of the most impactful global leaders. His IBM journey started in Buenos Aires in the WebSphere L2 Support team for Latin America, where he was responsible for mission-critical middleware, supporting financial, governmental, and healthcare customers covering several countries such as Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and Uruguay.
His exceptional performance and technical expertise quickly caught the attention of IBM leadership. Within 3 years, he progressed to Central and Eastern Europe, based in Bulgaria, as IT Architect & Consultant for SOA & Middleware. During this work, Juan led several innovative projects, such as lead architect for the European Union’s first SOA implementation of an e-Government project, “the automated Exportation Customs System in Bulgaria”.
This project was particularly significant as it represented the first time Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) was implemented in an EU e-Government context, establishing Juan as a pioneer in government digital transformation—an expertise that would prove invaluable in his later career.
Leading Digital Innovation Worldwide
Through his leadership of IBM in the Middle East and Africa, Juan demonstrated a keen appreciation for global markets. Later, his role grew to include governmental and education industry pre-sales consulting as a Client Advisory IT Architect, working closely with countries like Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
Through this work, he gained valuable knowledge about the challenges and opportunities in emerging markets, especially in the Middle East.
During his working period, Juan also spearheaded IBM’s University Relations Programs across the Middle East region, an initiative that would lay the groundwork for his later success in large-scale educational technology programs. Juan’s work included establishing partnerships with over 100 African universities and training more than 7,000 students in cutting-edge technologies.
Redefining Africa’s Digital Landscape
One of Juan’s most notable achievements during his time at IBM was leading the Digital Nation Africa (DNA) program — a major initiative launched by former IBM CEO Ginni Rometty. This groundbreaking program represented a $70 million investment aimed at bringing digital skills to 25 million people across Africa over a five-year period.
As the Program Director, Juan coordinated an extensive international team comprising over 50 dedicated IBM professionals, four external content and technology partners from Spain and the United States, and strategic collaborations with executives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The scale and complexity of this program demonstrated Juan’s exceptional ability to manage large-scale, multinational initiatives that create meaningful social and economic impact.

Innovation at IBM’s Prestigious Research Center
The highlight of Juan’s career at IBM was his promotion to a global position at IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center in New York — the company’s most renowned research facility. This opportunity came after a personal interview with IBM’s Chief Innovation Officer, David McQueeney, who recognized Juan’s outstanding skills and his potential to make an impact on a global scale.
At the Watson Research Center, Juan collaborated with some of the world’s leading scientists, IBM Fellows, Directors, and Vice Presidents. He played a key role in revamping IBM’s flagship education programs, creating new learning solutions that helped organizations adapt to digital transformation. His work focused on using Design Thinking and Agile methods to develop practical solutions for real-world business challenges.
At the Research Center, Juan conducted hundreds of workshops at various IBM offices and university campuses across the United States — from Massachusetts to Florida and California to North Carolina. He worked closely with Deans, Department Heads, Professors, and Teaching Assistants to help bring in-demand technical skills to non-technical learners. His goal was to bridge the talent gap and support economic growth through skill development and education.
Juan’s creative approach to education and skill development resulted in the launch of several innovative programs that benefited millions of learners around the world. As the Program Director for IBM Digital Credentials, he led a global network of more than 300 teams of experts in AI, Cloud, Security, and Blockchain. Under his leadership, the program achieved an impressive milestone of 6 million credentials issued worldwide.
Turning Knowledge Into Real-World Impact
One of Juan’s great legacies to the technology industry was the way in which he brought industry and academia together as enduring partners. Among other outgrowths of his work, there are several innovation centers, including the prestigious Columbia-IBM Center for Blockchain and Data Transparency, which was established jointly with senior deans at Columbia University and IBM top executives. This center became a model for academic-industry collaboration, focusing on research, education, and innovation in blockchain technology and data transparency.
The center also included an innovation accelerator to incubate business ideas from entrepreneurial students, faculty, and members of the startup community. In Jordan, Juan helped create the JUST Center of Excellence for Service Innovation, notable as the first center of its kind in the Middle East, featuring a novel Cloud Computing platform supporting the region’s first Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME) undergraduate university degree.
Current Role
Juan is currently serving as a Senior AI Technology Consultant. He provides strategic guidance for national initiatives focused on AI adoption and digital transformation. His responsibilities include using his broad global experience and wealth of technical knowledge to aid in the definition of policies and strategies that will lead Saudi Arabia in artificial intelligence and emerging technology.
His work focuses on fostering international collaborations with leading academic institutions, engaging with pioneering AI startups and global corporations, and ensuring that government initiatives align with global best practices while addressing the unique needs of the region. This role represents the culmination of his decades of experience in technology leadership, international business development, and large-scale digital transformation programs.
Academic Excellence and Continuous Learning
Juan’s dedication to continuous learning shows his strong growth mindset, which is essential for leading in today’s fast-changing technology world. He is currently pursuing a 12-month Chief Technology Officer (CTO) program at MIT Professional Education, a highly regarded course designed to prepare senior professionals for top technology leadership roles.
The MIT program includes both on-campus sessions at MIT and practical learning modules, such as impact projects, online courses, and professional development workshops. The curriculum covers key topics like leadership, technology strategy, portfolio management, generative AI, machine learning, cloud computing, and DevOps.
As part of the program, participants work on an impact project, where they identify a real-world problem and develop a business pitch, which they present to a panel during their second on-campus session at MIT.
Juan holds a Master’s degree in IT Services from Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, along with a Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems.
