My professional journey has been a dynamic and evolving one. I began by pursuing an MBA with a focus on Finance and Information Technology, and concurrently, I completed my certification in Oracle 8i databases. This educational background laid the foundation for my career in the IT industry, where I initially worked on various IT projects.
However, my career took a significant turn when I transitioned into the field of business development. I worked for a company in client acquisition & retention and later moved on to roles involving retention and collections with a telecom giant.
One of the most defining chapters of my career was the 14 years I spent with the Indiabulls group. During my tenure there, I had the privilege of serving as the National Head for Unsecured Recoveries, which allowed me to further refine my collections skills and knowledge.
Following my tenure at Indiabulls, I moved on to Clix Capital, formerly known as GE Money, where I took on the role of National Head for Personal Loans and Business Loans. This experience allowed me to diversify my skill set and understanding of the financial sector.
My journey eventually led me to Faircent, a leading peer-to-peer lending platform, where I served as the Head of Collections and Legal. This role further enhanced my expertise in collections and legal proceedings within the peer-to-peer lending space.
It was during all these times that I gained valuable experience in various facets of collections, including early delinquencies, early warning systems, developing multiple channels of communication with customers, telecollections, field operations, hard recoveries, legal proceedings, and skip tracing. These roles provided me with a deep understanding of debt collections and the complexities involved.
In April 2023, I embarked on a new and exciting venture by delving into Debt Collections Applications. My vision is to develop innovative applications within the loans domain to address some of the lingering challenges that have yet to be effectively resolved. This endeavor allows me to combine my extensive collections experience, including telecollections, field operations, hard recoveries, legal proceedings, and skip tracing, with my passion for Information Technology, providing a pragmatic approach to solving complex problems in the financial sector. I am excited about the opportunities this new chapter holds and the potential impact it can have on the industry.”
What led you to your current role?
I arrived at my current role as an entrepreneur with a strong desire to leverage my knowledge, skills, and passion. After spending over two decades in the financial and collections industry, I recognized an opportunity to make a significant impact. I wanted to create a product that would address the day-to-day challenges faced by collections professionals by combining my expertise in IT and collections. This pursuit of greater success and the opportunity to contribute to the industry’s evolution led me to venture into the world of Debt collection applications, where I am excited to apply my experience and innovation to solve persistent issues in the field.
Influenced by
One person who has profoundly influenced my life is Mr. Preet Mohan Singh Kalra. I had the privilege of crossing paths with him during my time at Indiabulls in Kolkata, despite both of us being far from our hometowns. Mr. Kalra, a seasoned professional with more experience in the industry, hails from Patiala in Punjab.
What made Mr. Kalra stand out and become a significant influence on my life was his attitude toward both personal and professional challenges. He had weathered numerous ups and downs throughout his career, and this had shaped him into a person of exceptional gratitude and pragmatism.
During one of our casual discussions, Mr. Kalra shared a piece of advice that left an indelible mark on me. He stressed the importance of having a clear aim or goal to strive for when one reaches the age of 45. His words resonated with me, as he highlighted the idea that all the hard work and struggles in our corporate lives should lead to a purposeful destination.
As I approached the age of 40, his wisdom continued to echo in my thoughts, driving me to contemplate what I wished to achieve by the time I reached 45. Mr. Kalra’s influence encouraged me to set higher goals and work diligently to attain them.
Even after I relocated to Gurgaon in 2018, our paths crossed again, reigniting my determination to reach greater heights. I find Mr. Kalra’s vision, actions, and unwavering commitment to be truly inspiring, making him the perfect idol for my own journey.
Struggles you’ve faced in your life
One of the most substantial challenges in my career was the decision to stay loyal to one corporate entity for an extended period, spending 14 years with the same organization in a known field. This path had its own set of rewards, but it also presented unique difficulties. It was relatively easier to climb the corporate ladder within a familiar environment.
However, when I made the choice to pursue bigger roles and venture into new territories, I encountered a series of continuous and formidable challenges. It became apparent that my counterparts, who had changed organizations and worked in diverse environments, had mastered aspects that were foreign to me due to my prolonged commitment to a single organization. As a result, I faced numerous rejections during this transitional phase, which triggered frustration, self-doubt, and negativity.
To overcome these challenges, I adopted a two-fold approach. First, I remained calm and introspective in the face of rejection. I refused to let negativity take hold, and I decided to turn each rejection into an opportunity for growth. Second, I sought input and advice from a variety of individuals, each of whom had insights into the areas where I needed improvement.
With each piece of feedback, I embarked on a process of rigorous self-improvement. I conducted extensive research into the concepts and execution of the aspects I needed to master. I knew that to overcome these challenges, I had to be proactive, adaptable, and willing to invest the time and effort required to bridge the gaps in my knowledge and skill set.
After numerous rejections and a significant amount of self-improvement, I finally achieved a breakthrough. I successfully passed an interview, and it was with an individual known for his stringent candidate evaluation. This experience reaffirmed my belief that nothing is impossible in life, and it taught me that the toughest roads often lead to the most beautiful destinations.
This journey taught me the value of resilience, continuous self-improvement, and the importance of embracing change. It reinforced my understanding that challenges are opportunities in disguise, and with the right mindset and determination, one can overcome even the most formidable obstacles.
What important lessons have you learned throughout your career?
Continuous Learning
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to always keep learning. Your learning curve is your path to better positions. Stagnation can occur if you perform the same set of duties efficiently for an extended period, making you less adaptable to market demands when you need growth the most.
Emulate and Innovate
Understanding what your reporting manager does and how they manage the entire show is crucial. It’s an opportunity to assess whether you can replicate their tasks, replace them, or perform even better if given the same responsibilities.
Stay Informed
Keeping abreast of industry trends is essential. The business environment is never static; it undergoes continuous changes in response to socio-economic factors. Your hard work must be aligned with these changes to remain relevant.
Aim High
Having lofty goals and striving to achieve them is essential. This path may be filled with frustration, self-denial, and struggle, but the ultimate destination is always beautiful.
Self-Competition
Rather than competing with people around you, focus on being your own competition. Strive to be better than your own past performances, and use self-improvement as a driving force.
Mental Well-Being
Incorporate meditation and yoga into your routine. Cultivating a strong and resilient mindset can assist you during the toughest of times, enabling you to see the positive aspects in all situations and giving you the courage to maintain a positive outlook.
Build a Strong Network
Maintain a robust network of experienced individuals. Their insights and experiences will prepare you to embrace the unknown and adapt to unexpected changes in your professional and personal life.
These lessons reflect your commitment to growth, adaptability, and maintaining a positive outlook, which are valuable takeaways for anyone navigating a career in today’s dynamic and ever-changing world.
Your Challenges for brands in the digital space?
The biggest challenge for brands in the digital space is multi-faceted. Firstly, it’s about creating a strong value proposition that resonates with the target audience. In the digital realm, consumers are bombarded with information and choices, so standing out and offering something unique and valuable is essential.
Secondly, creating awareness in a crowded digital landscape is another significant hurdle. With countless brands vying for consumer attention, building brand recognition and trust requires effective marketing and engagement strategies.
Moreover, brands must stay attuned to the evolving needs of digital users. Consumer preferences and behaviors are constantly changing, and brands need to adapt quickly to meet these shifting demands.
Lastly, one of the most enduring challenges is maintaining stability and resilience in a highly competitive digital market. It’s common for brands to face adversity, setbacks, or unfavorable results. To succeed, they must weather these challenges, adapt to market dynamics, and persist in their efforts to achieve long-term success.”
Adapting to these challenges is critical for brands looking to thrive in the digital space, where competition is fierce, and consumer expectations are constantly evolving.
